That's all from the Eliminator match of the SA20! Sunrisers Eastern Cape will move on to Qualifier 2, where they'll face Paarl Royals on February 6th, 2025, at 9 pm IST (3:30 pm GMT). Join us an hour early for pre-match updates and buildup. Until next time, cheers!
Joburg Super Kings' skipper Faf du Plessis reacted to his team's performance, stating that they played well, but a few overs towards the end of the Sunrisers Eastern Cape's innings shifted the momentum in favor of the opposition. Despite being set a challenging target of 184, Faf believed that his team had a chance to chase it down, citing the good batting conditions. However, he acknowledged that the opposition's bowling was top-notch, making it difficult for his batsmen to score freely. Looking back on the season, Faf expressed pride in his team's fighting spirit, despite being plagued by injuries. He described their campaign as "scratchy and ugly" at times, but emphasized that they would take plenty of positives from the experience.
Sunrisers Eastern Cape skipper Aiden Markram is also the PLAYER OF THE MATCH. Aiden says he is thrilled with his team's performance, stating that they were "a lot better tonight." He praised the team's collective effort, highlighting that everyone contributed to the win, making it a complete team performance. Aiden acknowledged that the surface was challenging to bowl on, but credited his "lethal bowling attack" for hitting the right lengths and making his job as captain easier. Reflecting on his own batting performance, Aiden admitted that he was unsure of how to approach his innings initially. He wanted to play aggressively, but the situation required him to anchor the innings for a while. Aiden expressed satisfaction with how he managed the innings, ultimately top-scoring with 62 runs.
Stay tuned for the presentation ...
Earlier in the game, Sunrisers Eastern Cape posted a massive total of 184/6 in 20 overs, setting the tone with a strong start and finishing on a high note. Every batter contributed to the team's effort, but Aiden Markram stole the show with a top-score of 62. The Joburg Super Kings bowling unit had a tough time containing the SEC batsmen, with Hardus Viljoen and Imran Tahir taking two wickets each, while Maheesh Theekshana and Moeen Ali chipped in with one wicket each.
The Sunrisers Eastern Cape bowling unit delivered a sensational performance. Despite being taken to task by the Joburg Super Kings' openers, Devon Conway and Faf du Plessis, who shared a 40-run partnership, the SEC bowlers refused to panic. Instead, they maintained their discipline and picked up wickets at regular intervals, never allowing the JSK batters to gain momentum. The bowling honors were shared among the SEC bowlers, with Craig Overton, Liam Dawson and Ottneil Baartman taking two wickets each, while Marco Jansen chipped in with one wicket. This outstanding team effort ensured that SEC remained in control throughout the JSK innings
Joburg Super King's chase of the massive total set by Sunrisers Eastern Cape began promisingly, with the opening pair providing a solid foundation. However, after the first wicket fell, the JSK innings lost momentum and struggled to regain traction, especially after the Powerplay. Despite being 61/1 in the 8th over, JSK's hopes were dashed when SEC struck twice in quick succession, decisively shifting the momentum in favor of the defending champions. Devon Conway and Jonny Bairstow got starts but unfortunately timed their dismissals poorly, which further dented JSK's chances. A notable contribution came from Evan Jones, who played a handy knock of 22 off 17, potentially making a case for himself to be drafted again in the next edition.
Joy for the Orange army as Sunrisers Eastern Cape wins this by 32 runs and the chase for the 2-peat continues as SEC progress to the Qualifier 2.
