Match Abandoned

Right then, that’s all from this abandoned Sydney Derby. Unfortunately, the final league match for both teams couldn't reach a conclusion, resulting in the points being shared. This means the Sixers will finish the league stage in second place, while the Thunder secure third, regardless of the remaining three matches in the next two days. These positions are now locked in as the upcoming results won’t impact their standings. That also means that Hobart Hurricanes finish on top of the table and will host the Sydney Sixers for the Qualifier at the Ninja Stadium. As Sydney Thunder finish third, they will play the Knockout fixture at their home ground - Sydney Showground Stadium. Looking ahead to Saturday, 18th January, it’s a thrilling double-header! The Melbourne Renegades will face off against Brisbane Heat at Docklands, while the Perth Scorchers take on the Adelaide Strikers in Perth. The first game kicks off at 11.30 AM IST (6 AM GMT), but as always, we’ll be here earlier with all the build-up. Until then, stay safe, take care, and enjoy your day. ADIOS! CHEERS! SEE YOU AGAIN!
Coming back to the Sydney Smash now, and the inevitable has happened here. THE MATCH HAS BEEN CALLED OFF! Both sides will share the spoils. We could get only 5.1 overs of action where we watched some of the vintage David Warner shots, but that was all we got. The rain has won here at the Sydney Cricket Ground, which is a bit disappointing because we would have liked to see these two city rivals go hard at each other for the bragging rights.
UPDATE - 4.05 pm IST (10.35 am GMT) - Things are not looking promising here! However, we are still waiting for any official word. While we do that, let us move from Cricket to Tennis. The Australian Open is going on, and we have already seen one of the biggest upsets in the second round. 19-year-old Learner Tien has defeated former World No. 1 and 5th seed for this tournament, Daniil Medvedev. The teenager took the first two sets, but only to be pegged back in the next two, which took it to the decider. It went to a tiebreak where Tien held his nerves and got the job done, winning the biggest match of his career so far. What a moment for the young kid!
UPDATE - 3.46 pm IST (10.16 am GMT) - Well, the happiness was short-lived! The showers are back on in Sydney and so are the covers. There were some talks about a 9-over per-side game, but now that will not be the case, and the best possible chance here looks like a 5-over contest. The prospect of that also looks grim at the moment. While we wait for more news, let us hear what Chris Green of Sydney Thunder has to say. He says any form of game happening is great. Adds that the winner of this game has a guaranteed top-two spot. Mentions that they have already qualified, so it is an opportunity to be the top cherry on the pie. Further adds that it is great that the crowd has stuck around tonight. Says that the outdoor furniture was blown away because of the wind, hoping that the wind will also blow away the rain as well. Tells that there is a big game of cards happening inside the changing room, some people are counting Duckworth Lewis, and some guys are swapping stories and telling jokes. Adds that it is always hard to go past Warner who holds court everywhere he goes and Sam Konstas's effect is nice to see. Ends by saying that regardless of the result, they definitely will get one game at MCG and to play finals cricket will always be a huge thing.
UPDATE - 3.31 pm IST (10.01 am GMT) - Some positive signs! The live visuals show that the rain has stopped for now and the big covers are coming off. We hope that it stays like this and that the outfield gets ready quickly for a resumption here. Let's hope for the best.
Earlier today, Australia Women completed the whitewash over England Women in the ODI series and are currently leading 6-0 (Points) in the Women's Ashes. Batting first, the Aussies posted 308/8 courtesy of a smashing maiden ODI ton from Ash Gardner. Beth Mooney and Tahlia McGrath scored half-centuries while Georgia Wareham finished with a flurry, a fiery 38 off just 12 balls. In response, England Women were bundled out for 222 runs. A couple of fifties from Tamsin Beaumont and Nat-Sciver Brunt, but other than that, no one could really convert their starts, and they ended up losing by a big margin of 86 runs. Alana King starred with the ball again for the hosts with a magnificent five-wicket haul. Now, all the pressure is on England Women as they will need to win all three T20Is and the Test to win the Ashes.
UPDATE - 2.52 pm IST (9.22 am GMT) - For a brief moment, things were looking good. The ground staff were removing the big covers, but then it started to shower again and pretty heavily. Very frustrating for everyone, but it is not in anyone's hands. We already lost a couple of overs due to the first rain delay, and now if and when we get back on, we will be having a much shortened game. The waiting game continues...
Pat Cummins, Australian Men's Team (ODI and Test) Skipper is up for a quick chat down the side. He says that it has been an amazing BBL season so far where many matches have gone to last-ball thrillers. Adds that he is enjoying it very much and has watched from home. Mentions that the energy is different this season. Davey is playing amazingly and he is one of the leading performers and playing like that. Talks about his preparations and that he is willing to do brilliantly and when the conditions favour you as a bowler then you can do much good. Talks about his excitement as he can’t wait to play at Lords and playing in Sri Lanka and is very happy with the win over India in the recent series. Informs that fast bowlers like Starc are getting rested and they are trying to do some practice in the net session in Dubai for the preparations of the sub-continent pitches. Concludes that the crowd has been amazing and the fans have come in full support of both teams where we can see half of the fans in green and half in pink.
UPDATE - 2.37 pm IST (9.07 am GMT) - We have some bad news! It is now absolutely pelting down at the SCG and the weather forecast is not very promising either. We can only hope that it all clears up and we get some more action in the Sydney Derby. Fingers crossed!
Oh..no! The drizzle is back on in Sydney and the players are going off again. This is a bit heavier than the previous drizzle, as a few umbrellas go up in the crowd and the covers come on quickly. However, there is a strong wind blowing and we hope this is just a passing shower. Stick with us for more news.

Tossed up, around middle, David Warner walks down the track and clips it wide of mid-wicket for a single. They want to have another run but the fielder in deep is quick enough to collect the ball and throw it at the non striker's end.

Full, quick, around leg, David Warner tries to flick it and gets beaten on the inside edge and wears it on the pads. There is an appeal for LBW from Todd but is turned down by the umpire.

Fired in, full around off, Warner comes forward and blocks it.

There is an appeal for stumping and it has sent upstairs to check it whether it is an out or not. On a nagging length, down the leg side, David Warner tries to tickle it finely but misses. Hasn't given a wide and the replays present that Warner's leg is inside the line so he will be not out and they are happy to continue.

Tossed up, around off, David Warner walks down the track and chips it in the air over cover. Steven Smith runs into his right, grabs it but throws the ball inside the ropes as he is going with momentum. They get a single but he has saved a boundary for his team.
